We say goodbye to our beloved Champion

Today is a very sad day for the Jacobs family, Maine Chance Farms, Gestüt Fährhof and the South African Racing and Breeding Industry, as we bid farewell to the kind, gentle Champion Silvano.

Silvano was humanely euthanased at the age of 25 after a serious bout of colic yesterday evening. He enjoyed a year of well-deserved retirement at his South African home where he was loved by all who met him, and where he received dedicated care from the team at Maine Chance Farms.

Silvano needs no introduction, a son of Lomitas, bred at the Jacobs’ German stud farm Gestüt Fährhof, crowned Champion Sire in South Africa on 5 occasions and having sired 25 Individual Gr1 winners and 101 stakes winners.

Silvano was the last great sire from the Nijinsky II male line – this legacy will continue with his incredible son Vercingetorix, a future champion sire.

A key reason to acquire Maine Chance Farms in the beginning was Silvano – he had all the attributes to fit South Africa as a Sire. We would like to thank all the great breeders who supported him in the first years – a horse from Germany with a strange pedigree and an owner they didn’t know!

From all of us at Maine Chance Farms, his loyal carers and everyone who supported him over the years, we say goodbye! Silvano will lie peacefully under the trees in his paddock where he will be laid to rest.
