Silvano four-year-old, Mr Winsome, secured his place in the final field for the  R4.25 million Gr.1 Vodacom Durban July with his gutsy victory in the Gr.3 Track & Ball Derby at Scottsville on 18 June.

Dean Kannemeyer’s charge engaged in a protracted stretch duel with Sun On Africa, but gained the upper hand close to home, to win going away.

The gelding was also successful in the Listed Michael Roberts Handicap in January, and has yet to taste defeat at the Pietermaritzburg track.

On 1 July 2017 he will line up as one of five runners for his sire, in the Greyville showpiece race. In addition to Mr Winsome, Silvano will be represented by champion Marinaresco, Gr.1 winners Al Sahem and Nightingale, as well as Gr.2 winner Black Arthur.

Silvano just missed out on a classic double at Scottsville, when our homebred Girl On The Run ran on strongly for a second place in the preceding Gr.3 Track & Ball Oaks.

These achievements set the seal on another splendid weekend for Silvano. At the previous day’s Turffontein meeting, his daughter Miss Bulsara, romped home to a 4.25-length maiden victory for Geoff Woodruff, while Count Tassilo justified favouritism by notching up his fifth career win.
