Making her first foray into stakes company, Silvano’s daughter Summer Pudding put up a scintillating effort to claim the Gr.3 Fillies Mile at Turffontein and become her sire’s 84th locally-bred stakes winner, while stretching her perfect record to three from three.
The race developed into a bit of a scramble as several fillies threw down their challenges inside the final 150m, but it was the Mauritzfontein-homebred who found the best finish and she maintained her advantage to the line to score by a neck from the Flower Alley fillies Keep Smiling and Marygold.
The Paul Peter-trained bay has yet to taste defeat, as this first stakes success backed up two dashing wins over 1400 and 1600m at the Turffontein..
The Fillies Guineas surely beckons for the unbeaten three-year-old, who is the second foal out of Gr.3 Jacaranda Handicap winner Cherry On The Cake, a Strike Smartly half-sister to the Equus Champion three-year-old and Triple Tiara winner Cherry On The Top (Tiger Ridge). Significantly, she also visited Silvano, the resultant foal being the talented filly Blossom, who last season reached the frame in all of the Gr.1 SA Fillies Classic, Gr.1 Woolavington 2000 and the Gr.2 SA Oaks.
Silvano narrowly missed out on a Graded stakes double over the weekend, as his son Sachdev narrowly lost out on stakes success in the Gr.2 Concorde Cup at Kenilworth. The three-year-old looked set to have the mile race in the bag, inside the closing stages, but was unable to hold the late thrust of King Of Gems and had to give best by a neck.
